Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, November 2006

Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tells the story of Joseph,
the eleventh son, out of twelve, of Jacob.
Joseph was his father's favorite son. This leads Joseph's eleven
brothers to become insatiably jealous so they sell Joseph into
slavery and tell their father that wild animals killed him.
Meanwhile, Joseph finds his way to Egypt, where - to make a long
story short - he comes into the favour of the Pharaoh and becomes the
second-in-charge of the land. During seven years of famine, Joseph's
now starving brothers arrive in Egypt and ask Joseph, who they don't
recognize, for assistance. Joseph, in turn, gives his brothers a
scare, but eventually grants them all they desire, reveals his
identity, and reunites the family.
(Of course that sets in motion 400 years of Hebrew slavery at the
hands of the Egyptians, until they are led out of Egypt by Charlton
Heston - err, Moses - but that's a different story!)
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat began its life in
1967 when it was written as a 15-minute commissioned piece for a
school in London by 20-year-old Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics
written by 23-year-old Tim Rice. Expanded several times, it reached
its current format in 1973 and was first performed on Broadway in
1982. It ran for 747 performances. Big names to have played the title
character (Joseph, not the coat) include Philip Schofield, Donny
Osmond, Darren Day, Andrew Darbyshire, H from Steps and, most
famously, Jason Donovan.
"Joseph" is a real tune-fest, and the lyrics are
some of Tim Rice's wittiest and urbane. Everybody loves a family saga
that ends happily for all concerned (apart from the goat of course),
so thanks to all who came with us to PUKKA dreamland, complete with
camels, calypsos and technicolor coats!
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was performed at
the Memorial Hall, Barry, on 17th and 18th November 2006, with the
agreement of The Really Useful Company, and supporting the Jamie
Adamson Fund. The Friday matinee was restricted to pupils from local
schools, and was very..interesting! The performance got off to a good
start when the audience started screaming as soon as the music
started. Fortunately it was more a "Freddie Mercury"
reaction than a "Freddie Kruger" one. With an audience
that was word perfect, and singing enthusiastically along with most
of the songs, the performance was a great success, and a great start
to the run. This time the souvenir programme was a full-colour
production in its own right, with puzzles, quizzes, masses of
information about PUKKA and Joseph, and a page where children of all
ages could get the cast autographs in the foyer after the
performance. Judging by the crowds, this last part was very popular.
There was also a wishing well, and sales of PUKKA memorabilia (pens,
christmas cards and novelties), all of which contributed to the Jamie
Adamson Fund.
Each show played to near-capacity audiences, and the production was
really high quality. The cast was superb, and the PUKKA Petites
deserve a special mention - their least active role was sitting on
the stage (which was tricky for some!) but they were also
active in the chorus and dance numbers. They were on stage for nearly
90 minutes and were a real credit to their parents, PUKKA, and the
town (at a time when some other people's children were smashing the
christmas tree on King Square!).
BIG thanks to all cast and crew, all the people who supported the
production back and front of stage, those who provided sponsorship,
and everyone who came to see the show and support us.
And a special thanks to Paul, Nicola and Sam Adamson for their
support and courage before, during and after the production.
